2) Barcelona.
If there's one city that rivals Madrid in footballing terms, it's Barcelona. The rivalry between the two clubs is famous, and reaches its climax every year with the El Classico (when the two teams actually meet on the pitch). This is a great time to be in the city: flags fly out of the windows of Barcelona apartments, bars fill up with the chatter of excited fans, and kids take to the streets with a ball in order to emulate their heroes.
3) Porto.
The FC Porto vs. Sporting Lisbon rivalry is Portugal's answer to the Madrid / Barcelona powder keg. It's probably fair to say that Porto plays Madrid to Lisbon's Barcelona, as Porto is both the capital city, and historically more successful. FC Porto play at the Estadio de Dragio, a 50,000 seat monster that is famed for its indomitable match-day atmosphere.
4) Lisbon.
If Sporting Lisbon is marginally less successful in historical terms compared to its great rival, then the fervor of the support from its city is no less intense. Come match time, nearly all the apartments Lisbon has become saturated with the noise of football as Sporting's games are transmitted into homes via television. Sporting Lisbon's home is the Estadio Jose Alvalade; tours are available for the interested visitor.
5) Villarreal.
Villarreal is at the complete opposite end of the scale compared to the cities above. This is a tiny place, but it's support for the local team, Villarreal CF, is no less flabbergasting. Villarreal CF consistently perform above their predicated level, precisely because - most agree - the local support they receive is so strong. For the football-fan on a tour of the Iberian Peninsula, this one makes a great antidote to the major cities cited above.
