Soccer has been around for over a hundred years now, but the game has evolved considerably in that time to the fast paced and action packed game that we see today. When soccer first began not everyone wore a matching strip but this developed into the game with the first jerseys being a heavy cotton material. Many of the early soccer jerseys were made from whatever type of material was handy to the teams, with one of the possible reasons for the colour of the Atletico Madrid shirts being red and white rumoured to be because they got the material from mattress makers in the town and this was the colour of mattresses at the time.
The heavy cotton soccer jerseys have been replaced over the years with a lot of different types of materials to make them more lightweight and better fitting for the players. nowadays the fabrics used are polyester and nylon as they are hardwearing and relatively cheap. They wear much better than cotton and are much more lightweight meaning they hinder the players less than the heavy 100% cotton soccer shirts.
A lot of research and design goes into the manufacturing process of new soccer jerseys. All the top brands like Nike, Adidas and Puma spend a lot of money on the latest fabric technologies to improve the performance of the football shirts. Nike have Dri-fit technology where as Adidas have Climacool technology that helps to keep the players cooler when playing and take sweat away from the body. This type of technology wasn't available back when the shirts were made of cotton and they would have got heavier and heavier when they got wet.
The fitting of soccer jerseys has also evolved over the decades with many shirts now having a tight fitting design that is supposed to make the shirts both more comfortable and to improve performance. When you are buying a soccer jerseys it is important to look at the fitting of the shirt so that you get one that you will feel comfortable in. The tight fitting shirts look good if you have the physique but if not you may want to order a size up.
You can of course still get replicas of the old soccer shirts if you are looking for the old style but the new soccer jerseys are a vast improvement on the old style. Soccer jerseys continue to evolve with new designs and new advancements every year so I am sure it won't be long till we look back on today's jerseys and see them as old fashioned and out of date.
