Derby della Madonnina, as known as the Milan Derby between AC Milan and Internazionale, is one of the most high-tempered local derby in football world.

It is called "Derby della Madonnina" in honour of one of the main sights of the city of Milan, the statue of the virgin Mary - which is usually called "Madonnina."

History and Rivalry

Milan were established in December 16, 1899 by former British vice-consul Alfred Edwards and were absorbed in nationalistic ideals which they wouldn't allow any foreign player to become part of them.

In 1908, issues over the signing of foreign players kindled a rift inside the club and led to a split and the foundation of F.C. Internazionale Milano, which caused a historical rivalry between both clubs.

In the past, AC Milan was the working-class team and was supported mainly by workers and migrants from Southern Italy. Meanwhile, Inter was seen as the club of the Milan bourgeoisie, being of the property-owning class and exploitive of the working class.

However in the recent years this difference has broken down, since Milan is now owned by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Inter is owned by oil tycoon Massimo Moratti.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Milan derby saw the Dutch trio of Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit played for AC Milan, while the German trio of Andreas Brehme, Jürgen Klinsmann and Lothar Matthäus wore the Inter colors.

This rivalry is mainly remembered for a famous 1990 World Cup incident, when Netherlands confronted Germany at the San Siro, home ground of Inter and Milan. The match ended in defeat for the Dutch as Rijkaard was saw red after spitting on German forward Rudi Völler. The Germans won 2-1 with two of the Inter players Klinsmann and Brehme scoring, a moral victory for Inter fans.

AC Milan, however, was the more dominant team both locally and internationally. They built a squad under Fabio Capello's lead, later nicknamed as the invincibles, and reached the Champions League final three times in a row

On the other hand, Inter's drought for a major title - their last major title was 1989 scudetto - ended in 2006 when the Calciopoli scandal stripped Juventus of the 2005-06 scudetto and handed it to the Nerazzurri. They has since clinched the 2007 Serie A title as well, with a record-breaking run of 17 consecutive victories.

The Most Infamous Match

It must be the second leg of the 2004/05 UEFA Champions League semifinal on April 12, 2005.

Milan were leading 1-0 (and 3-0 on aggregate) when Inter's supporters became infuriated after a second-half Esteban Cambiasso leveler was controversially denied by referee Markus Merk.

Bottles and coins were thrown onto the pitch, but soon increased to lit flares and Milan keeper Dida, who was clearing bottles in order to take a goal kick, was hit by a flare on the back of his right shoulder.

The match was halted at the 74th minute and restarted after a thirty-minute delay. However, Dida was unable to continue, suffered bruising and first-degree burns to his shoulder, and was substituted by Christian Abbiati.

But the match was finally abandoned in less than a minute after more flares and debris rained down. AC Milan was awarded a 3-0 victory, totaling a 5-0 aggregate and moved to the final.

Meanwhile, Inter were fined ¬200,000 - the largest fine ever handed down by UEFA - and were ordered to play their first four Champions League matches behind closed doors in the 2005-06 season as punishment.

The Crossovers

Even though Derby della Madonnina is one of the most raging derby in Italy, but surprisingly both clubs do not forbid players exchange between them.

AC Milan players such as Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf, Dario Simic and Giuseppe Favalli, all were played for Inter.

While Hernan Crespo is a former Rossoneri player in 2004/05 season. Patrick Vieira is also had a brief spell in 1995-96 with AC Milan, which he made only two Serie A appearances before moving to Arsenal.

Ajax Amsterdam is a Dutch football club based in Amsterdam playing in the Dutch first division. Its name comes from Greek mythology, Ajax was one of the most valiant heroes of the Trojan War.

Ajax has also expanded its program to recruit talent in South Africa and the United States, creating clubs such as Ajax Cape Town (based in Cape Town) and Ajax America (based in Orlando). Some players like Steven Pienaar and Aaron Mokoena arrived at Ajax through these "affiliates".

One of the brightest stars FC Barcelona, a team with no shortage of world-class talent, is a young Argentinean player who has played with Barcelona's youth team since his early teens.

Aged 11, his diagnosis with growth hormone deficiency in Argentina coincided with the collapse of the Argentinean economy and neither the Messi family nor Club Atlético River Plate, which had expressed an interest in the player, could afford the treatment.

The saviour of Lionel - or Leo, as he his commonly called - came when Barcelona's sporting director saw him play for his local club, Newell's Old Boys. Carles Rexach put an offer on the table that his parents were simply unable to refuse - to pay his medical bills in exchange for his family was willing to move to Spain and play in the FC Barcelona youth team, an offer that must have seemed like divine intervention at the time. His performance soon saw him making regular appearances in the Barcelona B team and in 30 matches he scored 37 goals.

Leo Messi made his first appearance in the first team against local rivals RCD Espanyol in October 2004, while May 2005 saw his first goal for the main FC Barcelona team. His appearances in the first team remained sporadic, with Frank Rijkaard seemingly easing him into the first team, but he remained a popular player with the club's supporters and frequently displayed footballing magic on a par with Ronaldinho.

His appearances became more regular throughout the 2005-2006 season, but he received a setback in March after injuring his thigh in a Champions League match against Chelsea. Barcelona went on to win both the League and Champions League titles, with Messi playing no small part in the success of the team.

Finally at the beginning of the 2006-2007 season Messi was awarded his first team number. Until this point he had worn the number 30 shirt signifying his status as B team, but he was now promoted to 19. However he received another setback in November when he was once again laid off through injury - this time a broken metatarsal prevented him playing for three months.

His recovery saw his return in February, in time to play Real Madrid in the Classic. The match, played in March, saw a game fought hard on both sides and FC Barcelona were able to score a 3-3 equalizer in the last minute. Incredibly Leo Messi was responsible for all Barcelona's goals!

If he can keep injury free then the future for Lionel Messi remains bright. He constantly demonstrates a resolve to put the ball in the back of the net and his footballing skills, while perhaps not as flashy as Ronaldinho, show equal genius. While internationally he plays with Argentina he seems home in Barcelona and we can only hope that the club is able to prevent him from being lured away by some bigger, better offer. Only time will tell.

There can't be many players, if any, who have been selected for a World Cup squad before they have made their Premier League debut. If it comes to that, there can't be many who have been transferred for something like £5 million pounds after making just 21 appearances in the Football league Championship.

And when you remember that the transfer from Southampton to Arsenal came when Theo Walcott was only 16 years old and he was a mere17 at the time of the World Cup call-up, you'll have some idea of the impact this player had.

Certainly anybody who had seen some of the fantastic goals that Theo Walcott had scored for Southampton wouldn't have been in the least surprised. From the minute he made his debut - at Elland Road against Leeds of all places - he looked completely at home; scoring in his first three league games, in fact. It was his pace that caught the eye first. Then his ability to control the ball whilst running at speed. Even his positional awareness seemed far beyond his years. FIFA claims that they are 'powerless to punish the 1998 World Cup winning striker because their rules forbade them to do so if the original misdemeanor had not been seen by the match officials.'

For an organization that can demand up to $100million dollars of broadcasting rights from any country for the coming World Cup in South Africa, it is indeed a fiasco to be deemed 'powerless' under such circumstances. The fact is that, this kind of controversy will not be happening if only FIFA adopted what so many other professional sports has adopted, that is make use of video replay technology to assist their soccer referees to referee their games. Only the highest rungs in FIFA and God will know what is keeping the most populous game adopting technology to improve the game.

Many traditional critics argue that refereeing in soccer should remain status quo, so that the human error aspects of the game remain as part of the game. At the very top, FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, is a strong opponent to using any technology to assist the soccer referee. Soccer lost a very good referee that day. Can we blame him? Or the Jose Morinho who led that publicity assault against his poor performance? FIFA has got to take a significant part of the responsibility as well.

The scary thing is that this type of anti-referee stuff is also taking shape at the youngest age groups. Refereeing resources are already tight, and at the lowest and youngest level of competitive soccer, young players and managers are also learning from what they see on television to openly challenge the soccer referee's decisions and cause disputes. It has become acceptable to lambaste the referee whether he made the right or wrong call, depending on which side you supported. This does not speak well of the game. What kind of sportsman ship are we teaching our youths? What kind of refereeing standards do we hope to raise if the soccer referees' job continue to be the loneliest one in the world?

FIFA will always support the soccer referee's decision, right or wrong. But this kind of backing does not offer practice support for referees at all levels. What referees need is an understanding from all that they are human and that they can make mistakes. If these mistakes can be rectified at the right time in a match through technology and appeals, the footballing crowds will not become overzealous in condemning poor refereeing standards. Technology allows that to be done, but sadly, authority does not. Wake up FIFA, before someone really gets killed because of a poor refereeing decision. It should not come to that stage. Football is a beautiful game after all.
