 *Author's note: Since originally publishing this on another site I have found that this title is already used for the website of a similar concept. I should have googled before committing to the title, but sadly didn't and now this story has already been published elsewhere with this title. There is no connection between the works at all. I was not aware of it when I was writing this story. I hope fans of the other work understand the common leap towards this name as most football and rugby codes use such acronyms .ie afl, nfl, nrl; you see how I got there. GFL is the obvious code name for any serious future code.
</p>
<p><strong>Also</strong>, as I'm an Aussie its worth pointing out that the following work is in US English, not International English. It was written for a specific place which required it.
</p>
<p>
 Enjoy the story and please remember that writers breathe your feedback. The good, the bad, the outright ugly, and constructive criticism is the best writer!food of all.

<p><strong>GFL (Galactic Football League) Final</strong>
<p>
 “LIVE from the Sunset Travel Corporation Hypersphere –” An excited voice boomed around the crowds. “It’s Friday night Extreme Football!” The voiceover paused for effect before continuing. “Tonight’s game is the series final and the Terran Tornados face off against the Luna Asteroids for a place in GFL History.” The voice echoed around the dome, pumping up the already excited tension of the crowds. “Fans who bought tickets to sunset travel with the dome will already know – but, those sitting in their lounge rooms across the Solar System will be thrilled to find out that the Hypersphere this week has landed on HAUMEA.” The crowds seated in the protected biosphere viewing area of the stadium hollered, stomped their feet, waved clackers and blew horns.
</p>
<p>
 “With an exceptionally fast rotation spin speed of just under 4 hours, Haumea also actually flips over on itself. This dwarf planet should provide an interesting final to the series with its unstable ground, dizzying rotation and extremely low temperatures that are under the 50 Kelvin range! Can our players survive long enough to get a try? James Bourke is in the Bank of Mars Locker room to find out what the players themselves think. James?” The gathered crowd cast their eyes to the large three-dimensional hologram displaying on the centre field.
</p>
<p>
 As the elderly former coach spoke to the players around him for the benefit of the fans; star centre, Mateo McDougall quietly pulled on his green and blue temperature controlled space suit. In this kind of climate it wouldn’t stop him from feeling cold, but, it would stop him dying from direct exposure.
</p>
<p>
 In the open locker behind him, the trainers he had just taken off now sat strategically placed. He didn’t know what brand they were and he didn’t really care. Someone had made a deal with his financial management team to have him wear them in and sit them in a strategic place before the game. The idea was they would be there in the shot if he was interviewed before the game. It was a fair enough gamble on the part of the company as not only was he captain of the team, in the last game one of his spaceboots had come off and he had nearly floated off into exposed upper atmosphere of a methane planet.
</p>
<p>
 Mateo shook his head at the embarrassing memory. He supposed that he should feel some level of either relief, or fear, but mostly he just felt shame. A sensation which was compounded more by the adverts for the trainers positioned directly behind him which were using the slogan, ‘You can trust these shoes won’t come off.’ Attempting to put the memory behind him to focus on the game ahead, Mateo reached for his new spaceboots.
</p>
<p>
 Just as he began checking over the boots to be certain, Mateo’s attention was called by James Bourke and the hologram projection camera crew asking how he felt going into the final for the season. He tried his best not to groan aloud and instead pasted on his stand-by fake smile for the media. “I’m feeling very positive Jimmy. I’m just in the process of checking my boots over twice.” Mateo joked.
</p>
<p>
 “Don’t want to be floating off on us again, then?” James Bourke chuckled.
</p>
<p>
 The interview with its bad jokes at his own expense seemed to drag on for an interminable amount of time, until James Bourke finally moved on to the next player.  Somehow though, the interview had put Mateo in a more positive and productive state of mind. He supposed that sometimes joking about your failures was the best way to work through them. He felt more prepared to focus on the final now than he had done all week.
</p>
<p>
 Mateo meticulously checked his boots over one last time before putting them on. He then found his helmet, attached his oxygen tank to it, and waited for the rest of the team to be ready run out there and get the Tornados a finals victory.
</p>
<p>
 It wasn’t long before a man wearing a stadium organizer’s uniform poked his head through the doorway and made the sign that it was time to line up. Mateo turned to his teammates and together they began thumping the tops of their helmets held in the crook of their arms. They quickly achieved a crescendo which they completed with an animalistic roar. When they were done, the players happily lined up behind Mateo and they made their way to wait in the corridor behind the door to the field.
</p>
<p>
 It was a silly thing to do, they all knew that. But somehow it helped to achieve an adrenaline rush which was needed for the game. Mateo no longer felt any of the nerves or emotions he had earlier, and as he waited for the green light above the door he felt as ready as ever to go out there and rip up a storm.
</p>
<p>
 When the light changed to orange Mateo put on his helmet and turned on the oxygen. A moment later the light changed to green and the door opened to reveal the field. It was all at once both alien and familiar. The same circular field, the same lines, and the same turf they had been playing on all season, but the exposed atmosphere of Haumea changed it into something entirely new. This wasn’t Mateo’s first time playing on the Haumean surface, but the shock of the sensation never faded.
</p>
<p>
 He suddenly felt light-headed and dizzy; he even caught himself swaying backwards a bit. With practice that came from a lifetime playing on strange planets, Mateo forced his mind to stop spinning and corrected his stance so that his feet were further apart. It was the best way to quickly brace against the fast orbital spin, and the sudden lack of gravity.
</p>
<p>
 In this kind of extreme, you could never completely adjust to sensations like this. Despite what some at home seemed to believe, it never got any easier. But, that was the best part of the game really, that was the real challenge in GFL. It was employing self-knowledge, mental tactics, and physical adjustments for survival in strange conditions.
</p>
<p>
 There were of course, genetic modifications that helped. But, with the Hypersphere landing on a different planet every game, and with no warning of what that planet would be, the DNA modifications only helped so much. Sometimes they even actively hindered your abilities.
</p>
<p>
 A player for Ganymede last season had modified his genetics to cope with extreme cold, which had been a massive advantage for them, until the Hypersphere had landed on Mercury in almost 600 Kelvin. He had burned up before he even made it onto the field. He hadn’t been the first, and he wouldn’t be the last but, Mateo considered it a lesson for all players, and had only ever modified his genetics to improve his mental performance.
</p>
<p>
 The man in an alcove to the left of Mateo waved a flag indicating that the commentator was ready for them to run out. Assuming that his team was ready, Mateo ran out onto the sacred turf. A magnetic field hidden underneath the grass kept him grounded enough for now, but he still felt the thrill of the floating sensation that zero gravity planets offered.
</p>
<p>
 To the sides were projections of the Terran Cheerleaders in their cute green and blue costumes. Ahead of him Mateo saw the giant banner of the Earth’s flag and he ran at it as fast as he could and smashed through the paper. A cheer went up from the fans which was so loud that he could hear it through the biosphere that protected the crowd. He hopped up and did a twirl through the air for them as his teammates came running through the banner behind him.
</p>
<p>
 Once his team had lined up, Mateo cast his gaze to the other side of the field. A tribal drumming played through his helmet’s audio system and the cold dark silver of the Luna team came crashing out of the opposing tunnel and through the solid grey flag which represented Earth’s moon. Mateo felt a chill that wasn’t from the temperature of Haumea run through his veins as the fierce and faceless solid grey force lined up across from them.
</p>
<p>
 The Luna Asteroids had a long running reputation. They were the series champions four times running now and they always seemed to leave a trail of bodies in the wake of their tide. But Mateo was determined, not this year. This was the year that the Luna Asteroids would lose; he looked down the line with pride at his 22 member team in their green and blue space suits.
</p>
<p>
 Through the audio in his helmet Mateo heard the first strains of Earth’s anthem. He placed a fist on his heart and let the pride in his planet take him over. When it was done he discretely pressed a button on his wrist to switch off his audio capabilities, allowing himself to wash in the sensation of planetary pride as the Lunans stood proud with their hands clasped behind their backs for their own anthem. When the Lunan force across from him began to relax, Mateo subtly turned his audio back on and instructed his team on their first play as they all moved into position.
</p>
<p>
 Once everyone else was in position Mateo moved to stand with his toes on the line of the centre circle, directly opposite from the captain of the Asteroids who was already waiting. A humanoid referee robot painted in black and white horizontal stripes strode up to the side of the circle between them, holding the oval shaped golden ball.
</p>
<p>
 The referee wasn’t there long before the magnetic field holding everyone to the ground switched off and a loud whistle blew through his audio feed. On cue, the referee robot threw the ball forcefully down at the centre of the circle bouncing it high into the air.
</p>
<p>
 It was reaction more than any conscious thought or planned play that made Mateo react so fast. He did it without thinking now. The moment the ball rebounded off the Haumean surface Mateo jumped up at the chest of his opponent, at once kicking the other man out of the way and manoeuvring himself into the right position under the ball with greater speed than he would have achieved with only the force of a single jump. When his head was almost level with the ball, Mateo somersaulted backwards and smacked the ‘golden egg’ backwards to his team with the top of his boot.
</p>
<p>
 When the somersault completed and he turned around, he smiled to see that his teammates had quickly begun to get themselves into position to set up the ‘Eagle Play Twist’ which they had been practicing since the semi-final match last week. The play had depended on both a low-gravity planet, and on Mateo winning the kick-off. He was relieved to be able to use their new play in the finals rather than holding it for some time next year when it wouldn’t be as useful as a surprise.
</p>
<p>
 As they had planned, the team got the ball as high into the air as they could whilst passing it very quickly to the right wing, and once Janet Sui had the ball, she turned backwards, pushed off another player and began ‘running’ up the length of the field backwards, dribbling the ball off the back of her heels.
</p>
<p>
 Two other players lined themselves up, one in front of the other just ahead of Sui and at the right moment Sui kicked the ball forwards and left to them. Mateo could hear the Lunan fans in the biosphere angrily yelling “FORWARD PASS!” But, the referee robot remained silent.
</p>
<p>
 A hologram just above them displayed the robot’s ruling to the crowd in bold green lettering: “Backwards pass: Okay.”
</p>
<p>
 Mateo read the ruling and laughed triumphantly while punching a fist into the air. As far as the robots saw it, it wasn’t a forward pass if you were moving backwards. But, no one had ever actually tested the theory in professional play before.
</p>
<p>
 Seeing the pass successful, Mateo quickly moved to his place in the line of doubles which were flying as an alternating slash through the Lunan defence. When Olsen and Pearson beside them got the ball, Mateo and Costa flew fast through the air to keep that little bit in front of them.
</p>
<p>
 The ball passed, and Costa pushed off from Mateo’s chest with his hands, to connect the back of his heels with the ball. As Costa moved forward, Mateo floated backwards struggling to correct his direction. Suddenly, a loud curse came through the audio and Mateo looked ahead to see that two Lunans had positioned themselves between Costa and the pair he was to pass to.
</p>
<p>
 To his left, Olsen floated with him still travelling backwards. But, Mateo realized Pearson and Lee were still moving forwards from their turn dribbling the ball. “Lee!” Mateo barked into the audio. “Go left to pair with Pearson and get in front of Olsen.”
</p>
<p>
 Bethany Lee didn’t reply, but moved quickly into position behind Peter Olsen and used her forward momentum along with his, to propel them both faster. Ahead on the field, Costa now had another set of Lunans coming directly at him, but Lee and Olsen caught up in time for the ball to be passed back to the right again.
</p>
<p>
 “Back floaters, double up and kick forwards; we’re going to need more people up there!” Mateo ordered as Pearson floated over and pushed off him to get moving in the right direction again. “Left side backs, go right. Olsen’s going to need someone to push off!”
</p>
<p>
 The play was back in motion and the Luna Asteroids were now floating the wrong direction, and most of them, with no one to push off from to correct it. The ball travelled right along the line once more, and then left again. The Terran Tornados now doubling up and correcting instinctively to provide a steady stream of forward floaters on all sides of the field.
</p>
<p>
 Just past the curved white light that marked out the ‘goal zone,’ Pearson had the ball and began the downward push. He reached his arm up, and used Olsen’s boot to push down, still kicking the ball backwards, now with the ball of his foot.
</p>
<p>
 Pairs all along the line began pushing down with him, but they weren’t needed. Oscar Pearson got the touchdown moving backwards and then somersaulting upside down at the last moment to push the ball into the turf with his hands.
</p>
<p>
 Above them, the referee robot’s calculations rolled in green light. “Between the goalposts – Yes. Hands on ball for touchdown only – Yes. Downward Force – Yes.” There was a slight pause and then in lettering larger than the others, the green light flashed, “TOUCHDOWN! Four points.” The words turned around in a circle for the crowd while Mateo whooped loudly along with the rest of the team which were deafening him through his audio. They had just scored the first try of the final, playing against the four time champions. It was still a long way to a win, but they had the score 4-0 to the Terran Tornados.
</p>
<p>
 As the words announcing the touchdown faded away, the roulette grid lit up in orange dots inside of the goal zone. The robot put the light dots through a selector which highlighted dots randomly before landing on one when the allotted time ran out.
</p>
<p>
 The selector landed on the outside line close to the posts and the robot’s instructions flashed above, “Left wing to take conversion from the mark.” Mateo made an effort not to swear aloud into the audio. Neither Heidi Oramo or Nick Karno would have been his preferred options to take a shot with an angle like that. Nick’s vision was still unreliable after his operation and Heidi had only joined the team during the last game. He had tried to shuffle them both to other positions before the final, but it was against regulations to change the team arrangements mid-season except in the case of replacing a deceased member.
</p>
<p>
 Mateo chewed his lip a brief moment before asking, “Do you think you can do it, Heidi?”
</p>
<p>
 Heidi Oramo didn’t reply but when the referee robot had placed the ball into position she kicked her feet off Nick Karno to propel forwards, and then swung her leg to connect with the ball. Momentum carried Heidi directly into the clear wall separating the game from the biosphere, and at the same time she connected, the ‘golden egg’ moved cleanly through the posts.
</p>
<p>
 “Six, Nil!” Mateo cried excitedly to his teammates. “Incredible shot, Heidi!” He didn’t have much time to cheer though as the referee robot instantly began powering the ball over to the centre of the oval, and Mateo had to be ready to race the captain of the Asteroids to get there first once the robot let it go.
</p>
<p>
 When it did, Mateo used his legs to push off from Wallace Boyd as hard as he could and raced towards the ball. Doug Lundy of the Asteroids was a little bit closer than he was, but he never had as much force to his kick-offs as Mateo did and he was hoping that would be enough to get him there. “Get ready.” He instructed his team who began to move on command.
</p>
<p>
 Lundy would have gotten to the ball first, but his direction had been slightly off too far to the right, meaning that the Asteroids captain had flown past the ball allowing Mateo to get there first. He hooked his foot around the boot and passed it back and left two positions to where Terrance Singh had said he was ready.
</p>
<p>
 Mateo spun around while still floating back towards the Luna goal zone to check that Singh had received the ball; he had, and Mateo instructed his team into the ‘Falling Star Play.’ As Singh kicked the ball down and left to Naruki Sakarta, Mateo heard a cry from Bethany Lee. He turned his head in time to see Doug Lundy reach out his arms to grab her around the neck as leverage to correct his direction. Lundy’s hand must have pressed the air seal button for her helmet though because as he spun around her, her helmet came free.
</p>
<p>
 “Beth!” He gasped as he watched the girl he had once wanted to marry suffocate from a lack air, and explode from the freezing temperature she had been exposed to. His eyes stung, but they all knew the danger when they began playing the game, and he would have time to mourn her later. “Serna.” He barked gruffer than he had intended. “You’re covering both Matthews and O’Hay now.” He didn’t hear Marianne’s response and barely registered the referee’s awarding of 6 penalty points putting the score at 12-0.” But, he quickly regained his focus, in time to see a Lunan coming up behind him. Mateo kicked backwards into the opponent’s stomach, using the propulsion to travel back towards their goal zone for his part in the ‘falling star play.’ It was all a bit of blur after that until half-time.
</p>
<p>
 As the gravity magnets were turned back on, and he floated slowly back down to the turf, he looked up to see the score at 16-4 in their favour. He should have been ecstatic, but he found he simply couldn’t be. With small steps that would keep him mostly grounded, Mateo slowly bounced off the oval and back to the locker room.
</p>
<p>
 As he sat heavily in his chair with his helmet on his lap the coach placed a weighty hand upon his shoulder. He didn’t say anything in consolation; the hand said more than any words would have anyway. It wasn’t there for long before the coach moved away to address the team.
</p>
<p>
 “Right,” The coach quickly got to business, “first off, Toby Smith is going to be heading out in Beth Lee’s position.” Mateo nodded at Toby and made an effort to listen to the coach’s plan for the second half of the game.
</p>
<p>
 By the time the magnetics in the turf were again turned off for the second half, and the team once more pushed upwards to make use of Haumea’s lack of gravity for flying tactics, Mateo’s mind was once more entirely focused on the game. It seemed Doug Lundy was even more focused though and he used Mateo’s own tactic against him to take the kick-off for the Luna Asteroids.
</p>
<p>
 Mateo found himself hurtling both backwards and downwards as Lundy and his spotter both sped upwards exchanging the ball between them. He didn’t know what the coach of the Asteroids had threatened them with during halftime, but there was a new ferocity to the Lunan team that Mateo knew would make it incredibly difficult for his Terran’s to hold their leading score.
</p>
<p>
 His descent quickly brought him to the turf and Mateo allowed himself to fully land before pushing back up again. As he flew, Mateo called instructions to his own spotter, Rhys Costa telling him to get in the middle of the ball exchange between the Lunans.
</p>
<p>
 Lundy must have anticipated Mateo’s reaction though because he hadn’t even finished directing his team when Doug Lundy grabbed Wallace Boyd, the Tornados Left Centre by his boot and used him to kick off from for a change of direction. Lundy’s spotter following close behind delivered a second boot to Boyd’s chest and the two Lunans sped up left field for a touchdown as Boyd’s fearful gasp came through the audio, “There’s a tear in my suit.”
</p>
<p>
 “Keep moving!” Mateo told him. “The others layers may still be enough, as long as you keep active. We are not going to lose another life.” He told them all fiercely. “We are going to be the team that beats these guys, to take our game back. MOVE team, get in there and stop that touchdown. We’re bringing that trophy home to Earth.”
</p>
<p>
 The speech was obviously enough to break through Wallace Boyd’s fear of exposure, for he booted a Lunan Left-Forward in the head and raced off after Lundy. Mateo didn’t take the time to watch as the Lunan anxiously checked that his visor was intact. Instead, he located the nearest opposing player and delivered a kick of his own to speed off after Boyd.
</p>
<p>
 Lundy and two others were advancing on the goal-zone by the time Mateo and Wallace Boyd got there. The three were travelling facing forwards, and kicking the ball in a succession of backward passes between them. It was a more controlled manoeuvre than flying backwards, but it was also a lot slower, making it fairly easy for Mateo and Wallace to catch up quickly.
</p>
<p>
 It was a desperate measure, but this close to the goal-zone Mateo didn’t have a lot of time to think, or employ clever intercepting tactics. So, he came up directly behind the closest player and as the ball connected with the Lunan’s boot, Mateo kicked the man’s foot forward instead of back forcing a forward pass.
</p>
<p>
 The call from the referee robot blasted in everyone’s audio and blazed in red text overhead. “FORWARD PASS! Ball turns over to the Terran Tornados.” Mateo back-flipped in the air and to the side of him Wallace Boyd punched at the air.
</p>
<p>
 His celebrations were quickly cut short though when a second call came from the referee robot. “Penalty! Mateo McDougall for interference on a successful mark.” Mateo looked around him to see they had floated over the line marking out the goal-zone, and swore loudly as he found himself frozen in mid-air and his audio cut off from his team. Around him words formed a prison of light spelling out “sin bin.” Mateo swore again as the words paused to hover in front of his visor.
</p>
<p>
 He was stuck watching as Boyd took the ball in a forward’s sprint up the field. Nearing the halfway mark Mateo could see a Lunan wingman floating upwards to intercept the ball. He tried to yell out to his team but with his audio switched off none of them could hear him.
</p>
<p>
 Someone else must have seen the interceptor and made the call though, because Naruki Sakarta pushed off from his spotter Yolanda Khan to shoot downwards colliding his feet into the would-be ball-thief’s helmet. Mateo was almost horrified to watch as the Lunan’s head rocketed backwards at an unnatural angle. He didn’t need audio to know that the person’s neck had snapped from the weight of the helmet dragging his or her head backwards at that angle. The person was now just a deadweight floating upside down in the sky.
</p>
<p>
 The score changed to 16-10 accounting for the penalty, but The Terran Tornados didn’t stop moving and quickly put themselves into the ‘Backwards Cobra Play,’ passing the ball lazily from Wallace Boyd to Terrance Singh and finally over to Charley Zand for a touchdown.
</p>
<p>
 With the score at 20-10 Mateo felt his team was in a very good spot as the sin bin around him was released and Tristan Kelly made a successful conversion bringing it up to 22-10 for the Tornados.
</p>
<p>
 He didn’t have long to enjoy the exhilaration though. He was facing a team which had not been defeated in 4 seasons. Moreover he knew he wasn’t going to beat Lundy to the centre of the field for the ball from where he was. They needed an intercept play, and he was quick to fire off instructions to his team.
</p>
<p>
 Marianne Serna, David Ziegler and Nathan Morrell on the right wing managed to block every movement the Asteroid’s attempted to make. Once Max Nassar was in position for an interception, they let the Lunan Wingman make his pass, and Nassar bolted up from underneath and took the ball from between them redirecting it to Billy O’Hay who, together with Leith Matthews and Oscar Pearson, managed to take the ball the entire length of the field and into the goal-zone. Kayla Rossi on the Left Centre took the ball down for the touchdown and Chris Nguyen got the conversion.
</p>
<p>
 With the score now at 28-10, Mateo felt himself relax into the game and it was an easy win after that. When the final second ticked away, the stadium and biosphere both exploded in a shower of blue and green, the Terran colours.
</p>
<p>
 For a split moment he thought of Beth who was now gone, another victim of Galactic Football. What was left of her, floated in pieces amongst the assorted debris that made up the Kuiper Belt. But the thrill of winning, this was why they risked it all; for this one moment of explosive colour. A blue and green banner floated off into the upper atmosphere to join her and Mateo smiled thinking that she may see it out there, somehow.
</p>
<p>
 “We did it!” He breathed into the audio to his team. “We beat the unbeatable team. SMASHED THEM.” His laugh was drowned out by the cheering and singing from both his team, and the fans in the biosphere. “WE WON.” He cried again as his electric elation kept rising. “We just became the first team in four years to beat the Luna Asteroids.” Mateo bit his lip, laughed and then spun in the air.

About adidas The vision of company founder Adolf Dassler has long become reality, and his corporate philosophy the guiding principle for successor generations. The idea was as simple as it was brilliant. Adi Dassler’s aim was to provide every athlete with the best possible equipment. It all began in 1920, when Adi Dassler made his first shoes using the few materials available after the First World War. The adidas name dates back to 1948, deriving from the first two syllables of Adi Dassler’s first and last name. One year later, Adi Dassler registered the Three Stripes as a trademark. After a period spanning almost 70 years, the Dassler Family withdrew from the company in 1989, and the enterprise was transformed into a corporation ("Aktiengesellschaft"). French-born Robert Louis-Dreyfus was Chairman of the Executive Board from April 1993 to March 2001. It was he who initiated adidas’ flotation on the stock market in November 1995. adidas--a name that stands for competence in all sectors of sport around the globe. Today, the adidas product range extends from shoes, apparel and accessories for basketball, soccer, fitness and training to adventure, trail and golf.</p>

<p>When fans want to do some shopping to buy league apparel that represents their favorite soccer team, they know that all they have to do is find a soccer shop online that represents all of the various soccer leagues around the world and take their pick of the soccer merchandise in their online stores. The interest in soccer has spread around the globe, and some people show their interest in soccer by collecting memorabilia from every league, including those that are not current.<br />
The Asian Football Confederation offers soccer jerseys for fans that support the Iran National Team, Japan National Team, Saudi Arabia National Team, and the South Korea National Team. Even though these countries are a considerable distance from the United States, it is possible to purchase jerseys through online retailers in the United States and own a historical piece of soccer history by countries that participate in the Asian Cup at very good prices too.<br />
